Putting Women Back into History featuring a presentation by nationally renowned journalists/authors Cokie Roberts and Rebecca Boggs Roberts. To benefit the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial Association

Sponsored by the Women 2 Women Committee of The Tower Club

There will also be an opportunity to purchase books by the Roberts and have them signed, and an auction of a variety of items, including Luke Bryan tickets.

Each ticket includes two drink tickets and heavy hors d'oeuvres, additional libations are available at a cash bar. A limited number of VIP tickets are available, and will provide an opportunity to join Cokie and Rebecca at a private reception.

The theme of the event - Putting Women Back Into History - is, of course, exactly what we will be doing with the national Turning Point Suffragist Memorial. The memorial will honor the 5 million suffragists who fought more than seven decades to win enfranchisement for American women. They engineered the greatest expansion of democracy the world had ever seen with the stroke of a pen ratifying the 19th Amendment to the Constitution and yet they and this incredible accomplishment cannot be found in our history text books! The memorial will be a visual symbol and educational tool to elevate these women and their achievement to their proper place in history.

Reserve your tickets to the event Putting Women Back into History.

West Falls Church Economic Development Project: Learning from Regional Experience. The City of Falls Church Environmental Sustainability Council (ESC) invites you to a panel discussion!

The purpose of this event is to engage City decision-makers and the broader community in a discussion of how the City can integrate environmental and economic sustainability principles into the West Falls Church Economic Development Project, driving resilient development, maximizing environmental benefit, creating place and reducing financial risk.

We will hear practical insights from professionals who have undertaken successful sustainable neighborhood scale projects in our region. Our distinguished panel will explore the following issues:

What do we mean by "resilient" development, and how can we apply insights from Washington DC's Climate Ready DC plan?

What are relevant frameworks and standards for resilient, sustainable development at the neighborhood scale, i.e. going beyond the building?

What can we learn from developers like Federal Realty Investment Trust and Urban Atlantic who are already developing and financing sustainable communities in the Washington DC area?

Why should we consider the site's energy infrastructure upfront?

What can we learn from Washington DC's Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District in terms of how sustainable development contributes to economic development?

Panelists will present for approximately one hour, after which we will have a Q&A session.

Election Day: Help your fellow voter!. LEAGUE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ON ELECTION DAY!

We need your help to make Election Day a huge success and to empower every voter to feel confident about their vote. On election day volunteers are present in front of each of the Falls Church City's three polling places throughout Election Day, handing out our Voter's Guide and thanking people for coming out to vote. It's amazing how many people thank us for doing the Voters' Guide, tell us they've looked at our VOTE411 website, and say they've watched candidate and issue forums during the fall.

The League is only present at the polls if volunteers sign up, and we need a lot of volunteers to cover three sites (Oakwood, TJ and the Community Center) from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. So please contact us if you are willing to give an hour or two of your time on Tuesday, November 7 + and let us know which hours you can volunteer and which of the three voting sites you want to cover.

Pay 2 Play follows film maker John Ennis's quest to find a way out from under the Pay 2 Play System, defined by Ennis as the cycle through which politicians reward their donors with even larger sums from the federal treasury--through contracts, jobs, tax cuts and deregulation. Ennis has recognized that by Election Day, so much has already happened to decide which candidates are on the ballot, the result is surprisingly undemocratic. The film features interviews with Robert Reich, Lawrence Lessig, Marianne Williamson, Jack Abramoff, Bob Edgar and many more.

Voter Registration Deadline. Voter Registration Deadline Is October 17; League's Non-Partisan Online Voter Guide Is Ready

Monday October 17 is the deadline to register to vote in the November 8 election or for voters to update their registration information, according to the League of Women Voters of Falls Church.

Voters can register or make changes in their information online through links on the League's non-partisan elections website, http://www.vote411.org, or through the website of the Virginia Department of Elections at http://www.elections.virginia.gov. Voters can also obtain registration applications at City Hall and the Mary Riley Styles Public Library, and can register in person at the Registrar's office at City Hall, 300 Park Avenue.

Non-partisan comprehensive information about this year's election is also available at http://www.vote411.org. After a user enters their address, they can retrieve information about their polling place and the choices that will be on the ballot. (This address data is not retained by the League.) In the City of Falls Church, voters will consider candidates for president and Congress, as well as two proposed amendments to the Virginia Constitution and a referendum on a proposed $8.7 million bond for the Falls Church library. The League site includes answers to a series of questions posed to the candidates and information about both sides of the ballot questions.

For more information on the Falls Church League and its activities go to http://www.lwvfallschurch.org.

LWVFC Community Forum: Referendum on Library Renovation. Free and open to the public.

The League of Women Voters of Falls Church and the Village Preservation and Improvement Society (VPIS) are co-hosting a forum examining the November referendum on issuing bonds to support improvements to the Falls Church library. The forum will be held Sunday October 16 from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Falls Church Community Center, 223 Little Falls Street.

The city has been exploring ways to expand and upgrade the Mary Riley Styles Public Library since 2012. On the November 8 ballot, Falls Church voters will be asked whether the city government should be authorized to issue up to $8.7 million worth of bonds to fund the construction, renovation, expansion or replacement of the library in one or more locations.

The program will conducted as an "Oxford Style" debate, with votes taken on the issue at the beginning and end of the program and audience discussion in between. The event is part of a series of non-partisan forums that the League is sponsoring this fall to help voters understand the questions that will be on this fall's ballot. An earlier event explored a proposed constitutional amendment regarding right-to-work laws.

For more information on the library referendum, the proposed constitutional amendments and the candidates seeking election this fall, go to the League's comprehensive non-partisan online voters' guide at http://www.vote411.org.
