The combination of apple sauce and peanut butter can be used in homemade treats, as a filling for dog toys (like Kongs), or simply as a quick snack. For an easy treat, spread a little peanut butter on apple slices and serve.

Applesauce for Dogs
Apple sauce is used to make these homemade dog treats and we use our homemade recipe. Always choose or make unsweetened applesauce. Avoid applesauce that contains added sugars, artificial sweeteners (like xylitol, which is toxic to dogs), or preservatives.
Applesauce provides vitamins A and C, and fiber, which can aid digestion. The high water content in applesauce can help keep your dog hydrated.
Ingredients
Just 5 ingredients are used to make these homemade apple dog treats.
- Rice flour - a gluten-free option that makes these treats easy to digest. It helps give the treats their structure while keeping them light and crunchy.
- Apple sauce - Unsweetened apple sauce provides a natural source of sweetness and moisture.
- Peanut butter - Make sure to use peanut butter that’s free of xylitol, as it’s toxic to dogs. Peanut butter adds protein, healthy fats, and a deliciously nutty flavor that dogs can’t resist.
- Egg - a great source of protein and help bind the ingredients together, giving the treats their shape and texture.
- Cinnamon - A pinch of cinnamon enhances the flavor without overwhelming the other ingredients. It’s also known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
How to Make Apple Peanut Butter Dog Treats
This is an easy homemade dog treat recipe to make, baked in under 30 minutes.
Place all ingredients in a large bowl.
Mix to form a dough.
Roll the dough and cut out shapes.
Place on a baking sheet and bake.
How to Store Apple Dog Treats
Before storing, make sure the treats are fully cooled to prevent moisture buildup, which can lead to mold. Store the treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. Place the container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
For longer storage, keep the treats in the refrigerator. They will stay fresh for up to two weeks.
Can These Treats be Frozen?
If you’ve made a large batch, you can freeze the treats. Place them in a freezer-safe container or bag, separating layers with parchment paper. They can be stored for up to three months. When ready to use, thaw the treats at room temperature for a few minutes before serving.
How Many Dog Treats Should I Give?
The number of Apple Peanut Butter Dog Treats you should give your dog depends on their size, dietary needs, and overall health. Here are some general guidelines:
General Guidelines:
- Small Dogs: 1-2 treats per day.
- Medium Dogs: 2-3 treats per day.
- Large Dogs: 3-4 treats per day.
Tips for Treat Giving:
- Moderation: Treats should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily caloric intake to maintain a balanced diet.
- Adjust for Size: Adjust the quantity based on your dog's size and weight. Smaller dogs need fewer treats, while larger dogs can handle a few more.
- Monitor Health: Watch for any signs of digestive upset or weight gain, and adjust the treat amount as needed.
- Balance: Ensure that treats are part of a balanced diet and not replacing essential meals or nutrients.
